The Watchers Trilogy Omnibus Edition eBook William Meikle Reviews
I just finished reading William Meikle's "The Watchers Omnibus. I was amazed at this book on several levels. It is quality historical fiction that ties the fictionalized plot into the time period quite thoroughly. It is also a first rate horror novel, replete with heart stopping horror scenes. Furthermore, it is an outstanding action adventure book. The battle scenes are meticulously detailed. In addition, it is a superbly detailed fantasy novel. The fantasy elements are detailed to such an extent that they have their own history that dovetailed with the true history of the world.
All in all, this is a wonderful book. I'll never be able to view the word "Other" in quite the same way again. (>
The character development was superb. Both heroes and villains have detailed histories.
The one negative comment I would make concerning this book relates to the backstory of the author's "Others." One of the characters in the book does state that the "Others" are notorious liars, and that character classified their story as blasphemy. And for that reason I don't think the author is out to change anyone's perception of the biblical account of Christianity. I thought long and hard about the matter before posting this review. I just can't see dropping a star because of the author's chosen path of creating a backstory for his villains. Indeed, some might say this it is one of the strongest points of the overall book. I don't share that opinion. But that's just one man's opinion. And in the final analysis, I asked myself if I would have been as drawn into the story as I was had the author not utilized that troubling storyline. In all honesty, I don't think I would have.
I highly recommend this read. It's a shame it's not available on .
Sincerely,
Ricky
I like history; I like horror; and I like stories that weave the two together. Sorry, I like stories that successfully weave the two together. Which brings me to The Watchers Omnibus by Scottish author William Meikle. This is a trilogy of novels in one tome; The Coming of the King, The Battle for the Throne and Culloden!
Meikle succeeds in creating a very believable setting for his story here by taking historical fact and twisting it to his own end, creating a Britain of the mid 1700s, ravaged by war against "the Others", resulting in Hadrian's Wall being rebuilt and fortified, turning Scotland into a very dark place indeed.
Meikle takes Scotland and turns it into a deeply foreboding place. Overrun with vampires, wolves roaming the woods and all manner of things that go bump in the night populate the dark... The author's vision also takes classic Scottish landmarks, skewing them to suit his tale and turns them into vampiric strongholds.
The author's writing style is entirely unpretentious and as a reader, I felt myself drawn into the world Meikle has created; so much so that at times felt myself hungering for bread, cheese and ale when consumed by the main characters.
The characters within the books are well-developed and compelling but Meikle has been criticised for catering to the "pulpy" end of the market. To my mind, this should not be considered an insult. Meikle has created an alternate vampire history story here that is nothing short of unadulterated horror entertainment.
Having not read any of Meikle's other titles, I suspected that the author has quite an eye for a set piece and would submit that this particular tale would translate well to the big screen. Pitched battles between man and vampire, bleak Scottish landscapes, dark fortresses, marauding undead armies, entranced maidens, pagan woodsmen and ancient magic... Meikle really goes to town on Scottish lore and there are a few unexpected appearances in the books too..
Overall, I would suggest that The Watchers Omnibus is very much geared towards a male reader and plays out like a darker version of a "Boy's Own" adventure. I would submit to you that this is not a slight against the books or indeed the author! My main criticisms of The Watchers Omnibus would be of the length and also the ending which seemed awfully quick.
Considering the subject material and the world that Meikle has created, I feel that as rich as the story is, there could have been a lot more depth to it. I wanted to know so much more about the characters themselves, the history behind the situation they find themselves in and I am of the opinion that the trilogy could have been substantially meatier.
However, these criticisms may well be deliberate as the ending leaves vast scope for further adventures of the Watch of Milecastle and perhaps even paving the way for prequel stories to be released.
Without ruining the story, I feel I can say no more. All that is left for me to say is yes, go and buy this book! If, like me, you like your horror with a bit more substance, you'll definitely enjoy this. However, there is still enough, blood, dismemberment, decapitation and general mutilation to keep the gore-hounds out there happy too!
kinda short, but enjoyable
A great alternate history combining vampire lore with the history of the Jacobite uprising in Scotland.
